What is Tampo/Pad Printing?

Tampo printing, pad printing, and tampography are all names for the same basic process whereby a silicon pad is used to transfer ink from an etched printing plate onto a substrate.

Pad printing, also known as tampography, is a versatile printing process capable of transferring a 2-D image onto a 3-D object. This technique utilizes an indirect offset (gravure) printing method, where the image is transferred from a cliché plate—containing the desired design—to a substrate through a silicone pad. Pad printing finds extensive application in industries that require printing on “difficult to print on products.”

The use of pad printing spans across various sectors, including medical, automotive, apparel, cosmetics, footwear, electrical and electronic objects, as well as sports materials. Its adaptability and precision make it an ideal choice for printing on objects with complex shapes or uneven surfaces. Whether it’s intricate medical devices, automotive parts, stylish apparel, cosmetic packaging, footwear, electronic components, or sports equipment, pad printing enables high-quality and reliable printing on a wide range of products.

The unique properties of the silicone pad enable it to pick the image up from a flat plane and transfer it to a variety of surfaces, such as flat, cylindrical, spherical, concave, or convex surfaces.

The Process Of Pad Printing

From the default position, the sealed ink cup (an inverted cup containing ink) sits over the etched artwork area of the printing plate, covering the image and filling it with ink.

Then the sealed ink cup moves away from the etched artwork area of the plate, taking all excess ink and exposing the etched image, which is filled with ink. The transfer pad presses down onto the printing plate and as soon as the pad is compressed, it pushes air outward and causes the ink to transfer from the etched artwork area onto the pad.

As the transfer pad lifts away, the tacky ink film inside the etched artwork area is picked up on the pad. The ink cup again fills the etched artwork image on the plate with ink in preparation for the next cycle. The transfer pad compresses down onto the substrate, transferring the ink layer picked up from the printing plate to the substrate surface. The pad returns to the default position.

This is the entire process of Pad Printing.

How to choose the right tampo pad printer?

The printing pad is the most important component of the hot stamp or pad printing process. It is essential that you choose hard, pointed, and large transfer pads in colour tampo pad printers for the following reasons: The harder the printing pad, the sharper the contours and finer the lines in your plate etching.
