What is Lohri Festival?

Lohri is a very popular winter Punjabi folk festival celebrated primarily in Northern India It is believed by many that the festival marks the passing of the Winter Solstice (Solstice is the point where the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest point in the sky for the year and thus ancient astronomers came to know the day as one where the Sun appeared to stand still.

Lohri marks the end of winter, and is a traditional welcome of longer days and the sun’s journey to the northern hemisphere by people in the northern region of the Indian subcontinent.

According to the solar part of the lunisolar Punjabi Calander, Lohri mostly falls about the same date every year (13 January). But this year, Lohri is supposed to be on 14th January 2023 because of which some celebrated Lohri on 13th January 2023 and some are celebrating today 14th January 2023.

How we celebrated Lohri at Aarpee Décor?

Firstly, we celebrated Lohri on 13th January 2023 only so that we can save the next day i.e. 14th January 2023 for Makar Sankranti festival.

The main highlight of Lohri celebrations is now the lighting of bonfires, symbolizing prosperity. At 6PM, after office hours, we gathered near the office buildings, arranged wooden blocks and pieces to form a bonfire, and ignited it. Once the bonfire was lit, we started playing dhol music and danced around the fire. We enjoyed various Punjabi folk songs and performed dance styles such as freestyle and bhangra based on our comfort and preference.

We even sang folk songs and especially the Punjabi people of the office. Based on that, they sang and through their lyrics, they chose which person out of all the office members had to dance along.

We also clicked many photos and shot an episode of Season 2 of our show “the RP office” presented by Aarpee Décor and the show episodes are posted over Youtube. You can checkout the show by clicking “the RP office” logo below:

Currently, we are uploading Season 1 episodes on Youtube, soon we’ll be posting Season 2 too.

We then mixed different types of eatables and sweets in a big stainless steel pot and mixed them up and enjoyed eating traditional delicacies such as revdi, gajak, popcorn, and peanuts, etc.
